The vets came out today to give spring shots, float teeth, etc, so I went out to observe . They had already done Brat when I got there, but when there was a lull in between horses, I asked the vet how he thought Brat was. He told me what I wanted to hear! He said that Brat was in GREAT shape, but that he does have a bad mouth. He said that was due to the fact that there wasn't as much of an emphasis on dental work back in Brat's prime, so now that he's older his teeth aren't that great. At the same time, his mouth isn't terrible, it's just not that great. He told me that honestly he didn't think Brat looked his age at all; he said he would've guessed 19 or 20. I thanked him for telling me what I wanted to hear; I told him that Brat lost so much weight a couple years ago and it was such a relief to hear such a great report. [It's a different vet than normal, but he works in the same office as the other vet we use.] So, I'm really happy about that ;D
On the other hand, our barn manager's horse [JoJo] isn't doing real well. She's 29, and she has a lot of problems. Arthritis, bad hip on one side, bad hock on the other, bad teeth [some are just nubs, and there are a couple where the vet could feel the roots emerging from the gums ] something about a bad right lung , etc. They were doing a flexion test on her back legs, and it took her awhile to put her left leg down -- the vet had to help her put it down [she did it slowly] and even then JoJo kept pulling it back up. A few minutes later when she did the flexion test on her other leg, JoJo fell over. Poor thing. It scared her so bad. The vet tried to catch her, but JoJo sat down before the vet could help her back up. When she did get her up, JoJo was so shaken up. It was so hard to watch. I feel really bad for JoJo, and our barn manager. She used to ride her in lessons a long time ago and she loved her so much that she ended up buying her, and she's had her a few years.
And I think the rest of the horses are normal. A couple have some issues like allergies that I didn't catch the report on, but I think the rest are all doing fine!
