(I'll post the update at the bottom of the thread) I woke up at 6:45 this morning to go riding; I wanted to go early because I had plans this afternoon; besides it's a LOT cooler in the morning. Dustin was an angel for the first half of the ride... I got off to put up a couple low crossrails, and when I got back on he had done a complete 180. He was being such a brat and he lost all responsiveness....and his brakes. So I ended up riding him longer than I planned. It's a good thing he was being such a dumbass, though, because I stayed at the barn later than expected. Which meant I caught Duck colicking. OUr barn manager had already left, and I realized Duck was rolling in his stall. I took him outside and he was acting normal except for the fact that he wouldn't graze. I wasn't going to hand-graze him, but I wanted to see how he acted, and whether he was going to try to roll again, etc. During this time i had called the barn manager & my trainer (who was at her day job), etc, and after that the colic had set in.... thankfully the vet came quickly. He said there was not a twist but he suspected ileal impaction. Anyway, I left when the barn manager returned and she was going to monitor Duck throughout the day. She just called back and asked me if I could feed tonight... they're taking Duck to the vet school She said he hasn't gotten progressively worse, but he hasn't gotten much better either, and he's gotten dehydrated even after all the fluid they gave him.

Yaaay! He's ok. They took him to the vet school (like I mentioned earlier), and Duck ended up getting surgery. They didn't find anything, which was good, so it was probably an impaction. I'm SO glad I was at the barn today; I almost didn't get to go. I thought I had something going on today which ended up being tomorrow, so I took the opportunity to go riding. And as weird as it sounds, I'm glad Dustin was being a brat. My friend and I think that God allowed him to be a brat so that I'd be there for Duck. Whoa. It's sinking in that if I hadn't have been there, Duck probably would've died. Anyway, if he continues to improve quickly he'll be home in 5 days! Hahaha. While my friends and I were feeding (I took over since my trainer & the barn manager were gone), my trainer's husband got home from work and came to see us. He told me I had to stop spending his money (He knows just as well as everyone else that I only saved his horse's life; gotta love Jim and his dry sense of humor)

i agree, everything happens for a reason and its a good thing you decided to go to the barn today! ugh, it would be terrible if no one was there to find him and he died but im glad he's doing better!

My trainer e-mailed me back and told me she really believes I saved his life (I thought I did, but she was the one who went to the vet school with him and saw him through surgery & crap... I just helped for the first 2-3 hours with walking him, calling the vet, etc). So that's a really good feeling.
And she also is considering my suggestion that Dustin is bi-polar. hahaha.

My trainer's e-mail update on Duck: ~*~
I saw Duck yesterday afternoon. He was looking much better than I expected. They let me take him out for a 5-minute walk, and one bite of grass! He was walking well and seemed to enjoy being outside. He wasn't happy about the one bite of grass. He is drinking well, eliminating well, and is showing interest in his surroundings. They expect to back off on the pain meds today and start feeding him tonight. When he is up to his full portion of feed and everything else is going well, he can come home (the vet estimates Sunday or Monday). Visiting hours are 8 - 6 at the vet school if his girl friends want to go and see him (only two-legged ones, please!)
~*~ I really want to go visit him, but there's so much crap to do getting ready for school. Aaah.
I'm glad he's doing well, though! And the fact that he's drinking well is great. My barn manager said he hasn't been drinking well this past month; she's been keeping an eye on him... she said he hasn't been acting differently, just not drinking water. So it's a good sign.

Oh, and he's got stall rest for 1 month, limited to a small paddock for 1 month... and no riding for 3 months.

aww. That reminds me of Belle's surgey coming up for her (suspected) hernia in a week. I'm really nervous about it, because she's never had surgery, and I just hope everything works out. I'm so glad you were there to catch that . It's a really heart-warming story. Definately made me smile, to know that you pretty much saved his life.

I hope Belle's surgery goes smoothly. I'm sure it will!
My trainer just sent out an e-mail and said Duck came home from the hospital today and is doing very well!
